Introduction

We’re looking at the latest mid-tower chassis from BitFenix: the Merc. BitFenix is a company that actively seeks input and feedback from the community on their product designs, and we think it shows. We’ve seen several BitFenix cases up close, and we think great strides have been made by this young company; they may have not been around for long, but BitFenix has been moving very much in the right direction in a very competitive market.

BitFenix is calling this case the “Merc’’, which we’re assuming is short for "Mercenary", and would presumably be targeted to the gamer audience. This is interesting, because the Merc is all business, not flashy like most gamer cases out there. While the Merc comes in two varieties, the Alpha (more fan exhausts) and the Beta (no fan exhausts at the top), they are otherwise identical. Perhaps the most alluring characteristic though, it the price of the Merc. At only $40, that’s a killer price for a gamer case.

Let’s be honest here: we typically see garbage cases for $40, but BitFenix promises that isn’t the……case……here with the Merc. We’re cautiously optimistic, based on what we’ve seen from BitFenix before, so let’s take a closer look at the Merc and find out if the successful trend continues.
