ASUS Sabertooth 990FX
The ASUS Sabertooth 990FX is an interesting board. The TUF Series aesthetics are unlike any other we’ve seen of any socket out there, the ceramic coating is entirely original, and the price is surprisingly affordable. It has a great layout, is packed with critical features such as SATA 6G, USB 3.0, and even powered eSATA. The build quality is superb, the overclocking prowess is very impressive, and the UEFI BIOS is excellent. So what’s the catch? Why is this board priced so well when compared to other 990FX boards? We’re not sure there is a catch, to be honest.
In terms of functionality, the addition of SLI is a very welcome sight for the Nvidia faithful as now AMD enthusiasts can have the best of both worlds with Crossfire and SLI. The new UEFI BIOS which has been around for a short time has been honed by ASUS and runs without a hiccup. The new AI Suite II is also an excellent overall tool for both novices and hardcore enthusiasts, allowing a huge amount of customization, including robust Auto features. After seeing many motherboards up close, we feel AI Suite II is the easiest and best software for the AMD platform amongst all manufacturers.
In terms of usability and stability, the Sabertooth 990FX is rock solid. If you’re a novice and hesitant to tweak much in the BIOS, then just dial in a higher multiplier, set your RAM speed, and let the Auto settings take care of the rest; you’ll be pleased with the quick and easy results.
We can’t say enough superlatives about the performance of the Sabertooth. It overclocked in the same neighborhood as the Crosshair V Formula on water but dry ice results were nothing short of outstanding as it beat all 990FX motherboards we’ve been testing. Perhaps most impressive is its price; retailing for $200, this is comparable with competing boards that don’t pack as many features or can’t be pushed as far. Don’t let the price fool you, the Sabertooth 990FX is no slouch. It is an impressive all-around board that is more than capable of satisfying most consumers that need something stable and feature-rich, and it won’t break the bank in the process.
The Pure Point: With a killer feature package, performance, and price, the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX completes the elusive golden trifecta.
