To get a better understanding of the X79 platform we have included Intel’s diagrams for the X79 chipset and the Z68 chipset. They do look rather similar, but there are some distinct differences, and two in particular. The first is the X79 supports the new LGA2011 socket and Sandy-Bridge-E processors, while Z68 is relegated to LGA 1155 socket. The second significant difference is found in the memory, as X79 supports quad channel memory configurations, while the Z68 supports dual channel memory setups.
Looking closely at the two diagrams below you will notice that the X79 Chipset supports 40 lanes of PCI Express 2.0 for Graphics which will support up to five graphics cards in a 1×16, 2×8, and 2×4 configurations, which can be an advantage over the Z68 that supports only 16 Lanes by comparison.
We also noted that while the Z68 Chipset supports the Intel Smart Response Technology, the X79 has dropped this feature. We are not really shocked by Intel’s decision here since if you are paying up to $1000 for their flagship Core i7 3960X processor, not to mention a new motherboard and a decent set of Quad channel memory, you will most likely be installing one of the newer SATA III Solid State Drives in your rig as well.
