Introduction

When AMD launched the 5000 series graphics cards about a year ago, they were first to market with DX11 products. And while DX11 still hasn’t quite hit the mainstream yet in terms of widespread popularity, the 5000 cards themselves proved to be a hit, offering excellent gaming performance, running rather cool and quiet for the most part (at least, the non-reference models), and perhaps most importantly, bringing good value and price to the market.

Nvidia lagged behind with their Fermi product lineup, though the GTX 460 has really made a positive impression and picked up some of that slack. But AMD is ahead of the curve in their product development, having had a jump start with their initial release last year. And this brings us today’s launch of the 6000 series graphics cards, the new generation from AMD.

There are some considerable differences with this launch: gone is the ATI namesake, as it’s now exclusively AMD. Long live ATI! And the naming moniker of these new 6870 and 6850 is rather odd since they’re not really successors to the former flagship cards. In fact, these new cards are more mainstream or "low end" gaming cards in the new lineup. This means that while there may be some initial confusion, the performance prospects are tantalizing. It remains to be seen if AMD can pull more winners out of the hat.

We’ve come to expect big things from ASUS, and their latest powerhouse is the Radeon 6870. It’s a reference design for the most part, but it brings voltage tweaking capabilities to enthusiasts looking for something special. Boasting some strong gaming horsepower at a very competitive price, it sounds very tempting. Let’s take a closer look at the ASUS Radeon EAH6870 1GB and see what it can do.
