Packaging & Accessories

The box for the GTX 285 Matrix is quite large, and ASUS has gone with a brighter, eye-catching red and crimson choice, par for the course for their Republic of Gamer series product lineups. We’ve seen this type of package on their Rampage II Extreme and Formula motherboards, for example, and it’s quite nice to see it make an appearance here on a graphics card product.

The front graphic is rather futuristic, and the rear of the box mentions the major features and specifications of the Matrix. However, there is a flap on the box that opens up to partially reveal the graphics card behind clear plastic. The glimpse is just enough to whet your appetite and increase the anticipation of lies inside. More importantly, however, is the inner flap describes several features that are ASUS-specific such as Super Hybrid Engine, voltage adjustment capabilities, iTracker 2 software, non-reference heatsink and fan assembly, and colourful load indicators. We’ll be taking a closer look at these features in few moments so we’ll just mention them here for posterity.

A plain, black inner box is then removed from the flashy outer one which reveals the Matrix packed tightly in dense, form-fitting foam. One removed, there is another black box on the bottom which contains the owner’s manual and disks. To the right of this box is another half-box that contains the physical connectors for the card. With all these boxes inside of boxes, it’s like a Russian egg toy; you wonder when you’ll actually reach the end. It does help build the excitement, I will admit, as getting to all the goodies inside is part of the fun.

Once all the boxes are opened and contents removed, you’re left with an extensive accessories package, including drivers, Molex-to-6 pin PCI-e power cable converters, HDTV to component connector, DVI to D-Sub adapter, a DVI-to-HDMI adapter, and an S/PDIF digital sound connector. Lastly, there is a handsome disk pouch, complete with several inner sleeves and a magnetic flap to keep your disks secure and free from scratches. It’s a very complete accessory package, something we’ve come to expect from ASUS RoG products. The only thing we don’t see here is any sort of included game, which is mildly disappointing.

Let’s now move onto a closer look at the card itself.
