Summary

The ASRock 890FX Deluxe4 is a cost effective AM3 motherboard, and enthusiasts on a modest budget will do well to consider it as an option for Phenom II chips, particularly if SATA 6G and USB 3.0 are on the wish list of upgrade features.

In terms of layout and design, the Deluxe4 is quite good with only a few minor niggles, such as the oddly-placed SATA ports located at the bottom left corner of the board, the LCD display that will be obscured if the bottom expansion slot is used, the tricky PCI-Express clips, and the Southbridge that tends to get hot if overclocking and not actively cooled with a fan. These are not dealbreakers for the Deluxe4 though, as this board is capable and impressive for the price.

In terms of performance features, the OC Tuner is fairly robust though the interface is needlessly extravagent and a bit over the top. The SATA 6G and USB 3.0 can harness the power of a fast SSD, and the SB850 offer bundles of bandwidth, far more than Intel’s X58 or P55, so there is some amazing connectivity and performance potential here. Hardcore overclockers will find the BIOS a bit lacking in terms of advanced features and really smart layout, but the average user or enthusiast should have no issues in pushing a Phenom II chip. The front panel USB 3.0 is also an excellent feature, and as we saw in our SSD testing, there really isn’t a performance difference between the front panel and back I/O port connections, so thankfully no compromises are being made here.

The build quality here is also well done; ASRock has come a long way over the past couple of years in establishing themselves as providing great value boards in the marketplace. On that note, the 890FX Deluxe4 is available for approximately $160 USD, which sits as the least expensive 890FX board on the market that offers SATA 6G and USB 3.0. It’s priced better than competitors’ boards, so this Deluxe4 is an excellent deal for the features offered. Unless you’re looking for extreme overclocks then it’s hard to justify spending the extra cash because this ASRock board offers just about everything the majority of users could want at a great price.

Don’t expect to break speed records on sub-zero overclocking on this board, but if you have a modest budget and a fairly lofty wishlist, then the ASRock 890FX Deluxe4 is an excellent deal.
