As we’ve been seeing for some time now, this is just a speed bump, with the exception of the Phenom II X4 840. Simple clock speed bumps. 100Mhz, and a rebrand.

The Phenom II X4 840 shows up in CPU-Z as a Deneb based processor without any L3 cache. We emailed AMD and asked, “What is up with this? What happened to the older X4 800 series with some of the L3 cache disabled?” Well, we were told that it’s the Propus die, the Athlon II X4, and not an actual Deneb based Phenom II. What does that mean, you ask? Propus has speed walls – no 4.4GHz here – and no unlocking any L3 cache. AMD said that they thought 3.2GHz was too fast to call an Athlon II X4. Interesting. Coming in at $100, though, isn’t so bad. Our only real complaint is that it may confuse consumers.

The other chip coming out is the Phenom II X4 975, clocking in at 3.6GHz.
Spec wise, they’re the same as their brothers, with 0.5X added onto the stock multiplier.

  • Total Cache: 2MB (L2: 512KBx4)

With that said, let’s get these chips juiced up.

    check that out……I know this post is pretty old here but I just have to point a few things out here ….the amd phenom II X4 840 does have a unlockable l3 6 meg cach …well the one I have does…..and reaching 4.5 GHz was not easy my motherboard is a low end asus board although I got this to run stable at those speeds I couldn’t keep this board running like this due to heat issues of the motherboard….. my cpu is water-cooled so heat on the chip was not a issue…..waaassshhhhooooooo loving the amd chip’s
