What if I told you an R9 290X was competing with a GTX 980 Ti?

So, I’m browsing the internet trying to find out whether I should save some cash and go with the i5-6600K, or go all out with an i7-6700K. I already know that there won’t be much of a discernible difference with current games, but DirectX 12 games are on the horizon, I just got a beta invite to one such game, and there could be some performance to gain from the hyper-threading. I didn’t find the info I wanted, but I did find something astonishing. The GTX 980 Ti seems almost untouchable, but you can imagine my shock when I saw an R9 290X tying, and even beating the Maxwell behemoth in several benchmarks. Yesterday, I did a pretty heavy write-up on some Ashes of the Singularity benchmarks that surfaced about a week ago. It turns out, those weren’t the only ones done. Ars Technica decided to do a very comprehensive set of tests that involved comparing an old school R9 290X with a very state of the art GTX 980 Ti and pretty much showed the card matching the NVIDIA flagship on every turn. The 980 Ti still destroys AMD’s part in DirectX 11, but once we get to 12 we see a super competitive landscape. Here’s a couple patterns I noticed. The GTX card benefits slightly more from 6 cores and hyper-threading than the R9 card does at higher resolutions. The NVIDIA card also has a slight advantage with average framerates during the heavy scenes. An interesting thing that was happening was that once hyper-threading was disabled and the CPU was reduce...

Bitfenix Alchemy 2.0 Magnetic LED Strips

Introduction OK, let’s lay this right out there before we really get started… Here at Pure Overclock we sometimes like to create mods for our PCs that are not strictly about performance. Yes indeed, on occasion, we also mod our PCs to make them look great, or make them quieter, or to make a statement. Today’s review is about two of these: making your PC look great and making a statement. Today, we’re going to be looking at the newly released Bitfenix Alchemy 2.0 Magnetic LED-Strip lighting kits. As part of the BitFenix Premium Modding Series, the Alchemy 2.0 Magnetic LED Strips are an update of the BitFenix Alchemy LED Strip line. They do have a couple of significant new features, which we’ll get to a bit later in the review. Before we get to the bright glowy things, let’s see who BitFenix is: Focused on combining superior design with the latest advances in technology, BitFenix creates state-of-the-art computer hardware and peripherals that blur the line between man and machine. Users shouldn’t have to adjust themselves to the way their hardware works. So, we strive to put the user in complete control of his hardware, so that it functions as an extension of his will, and not as another variable he has to compensate for. In the heat of battle, the user should not have to worry about the state of his equipment, which is why BitFenix products are engineered to perform under even the most extreme conditions. No matter how taxing the s...

Ashes of the Singularity Scaling: The AMD Crossroads

Last week, the new game, “Ashes of Singularity” had a pretty comprehensive scaling review performed with both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. The results were interesting to say the least. Multiple CPUs were used to test both the R9 390X as well as the GTX 980. While AMD enjoyed some impressive gains, NVIDIA had some fairly lackluster results that even prompted the company to release statements for damage control. It would be very easy to say that AMD is making a comeback and NVIDIA is gonna be in trouble, but that would be too easy. How can we come to the proper conclusions about these results? Let me start off by saying that this is great news for AMD. It’s long been claimed that Radeon GPUs would be much better if the drivers could just utilize them properly. It seems this is almost true, but rather than drivers, it’s APIs that needed to take advantage of that hardware. However, I’m seeing some massive problems here that if AMD doesn’t quickly solve them, we can say goodbye to competition for a long time to come. I want to show you three conclusions that I saw from these results, and why I think there could be more bad news here than good if AMD doesn’t make some dramatic changes in the near future. (Click for Larger View) Let’s begin with the first big implication these AotS results are showing us. AMD needs to refocus their software development. This seems like something that is already in progress, but when we see what Direc...

The GTX 950 Review that Matters

I’ve been a long time League of Legends player. I’m one of those silver scrubs who likes to play competitively, tries to get to gold, but ultimately just uses LoL as an excuse to hang with his friends. League has had it’s moments for me, but ultimately, the game is too time constraining and frustrating for me to actually get anywhere. Then Heroes of the Storm happened. I found such a perfect blend of competitiveness combined with a schedule friendly match system, that I haven’t touched League for a good month or two now. So when I heard the GTX 950 was the go-to card for MOBA games, imagine my surprise when nobody was measuring frame rates in MOBA games. (Especially since they’re free!) Thankfully, I finally found a review that focused on MOBAs and I have to say, the GTX 950 is looking like a nice little card. Hardware Heaven posted a review on several GTX 950 cards and personally, outside of skipping the overclock section, I think they nailed it. First off, they highlighted the pipeline advantage. Basically, NVIDIA optimized the render path so that the delay is cut nearly in half. This should lead to a smoother overall gaming experience but should also help reduce latency and that’s important in competitive games. Whether or not that drop in latency is actually noticeable, the frame rates on the various MOBAs are looking good. The only game that the GTX 950 lagged behind an R7 370 in is DOTA 2: Reborn. The other MOBAs on the list gave...

Nixeus NX-VUE24 24″ FreeSync 144Hz Gaming Monitor Review

Introduction AMD FreeSync is a topic that has been buzzing around lately and has sparked some major debates over the web. While we’re not here to debate FreeSync over G-Sync and vise-versa, we are here to talk about what FreeSync can bring to the table. In recent years, we have been hearing about nVidia’s G-Sync technology and its benefits, and we have seen many rave reviews and tests with a G-Sync Monitor, but it seemed that AMD was left behind in this arena while nVidia seemed to have capitalized on the G-Sync Technology. However, with the recent technology advances from AMD’s graphics line up and the team up with VESA, we are now seeing AMD FreeSync displays and graphics cards showing up in the market, and we love to see competition. Not only does this leave room for a competitive market, but now this also gives AMD fans a hand in the technology. Although they don’t exactly perform the same way, they both have the same concept in mind. We will go over the AMD FreeSync technology in just a little bit. In the meantime… we bring you the new Nixeus 24″ FreeSync 144Hz Gaming Display review. The Nixeus brand is not as mainstream as some of the other popular brands like ASUS, BenQ or even Acer, but they are hitting the market strong with their new AMD FreeSync enabled display. We were one of the few lucky sites that were able to get our hands on an initial engineer sample of the Nixeus 24″ FreeSync 144Hz Gaming Display. This is our...

Reeven Okeanos CPU Cooler Review

Introduction Reeven is a fairly new company that has been trying to prove it has what it takes in the computer hardware industry. I’ve already reviewed two products from them and both were incredibly good considering how new the company is. They also offer products that I felt were preferential to anything else on the market. Reeven is trying to do something special here and I feel like the Okeanos CPU cooler will help us unfold more of what their end game is going to be. However, the dual tower CPU cooler market is very competitive and even if a product shows that it can handle the heat, there has to be some very compelling reasons to make it the clear winner for a person’s system. Does the Reeven Okeanos have what it takes? We’ll find out soon enough, but first, let’s get a refresher about who Reeven is. REEVEN is a newly established international manufacturer of PC related products. REEVEN’s product lines includes the best quality of advanced CPU coolers, Cooling Fans,PC Cases and many other items. the target of our products will be a wide range of audience under our philosophy “Professional Quality Gears”, for products that will withstand the highest demand I still can’t place my finger on what “Professional Quality Gears” means exactly. The world may never know.

The EK-Predator, Because it Feasts on Heat

We’ve seen quite a few AIO coolers hit the market in recent years. Scratch that! We’ve seen a BUNCH of AIO coolers hit the market in recent years. Actually, let me try this again. We’ve seen an ASTRONOMICALLY HUGE AMOUNT of AIO coolers hit the market in recent years. Whether or not you think that’s an over exaggeration, the fact remains that many companies have tried to make their mark in the liquid cooling market. The problem is, very few coolers actually come close to accomplishing what a decent custom loop can do. However, that may begin to change because EK is deciding to try their hand at the AIO market, and they look like they’re doing it right. EK is going to have two variants of the Predator AIO Cooling unit, the 240 and 360. As you can already guess, one has a 240mm rad with the other running a 360mm rad. Normally, a 240mm might be a little small for expanding, but considering how thick the radiator is on this unit, adding a GPU or VRM heatsink to the loop should be just fine. With the 360mm I’m sure there will be plenty of cooling for some more extra components and adding radiators or reservoirs down the road should be a snap. This AIO is more of a cooling kit than it is an AIO, but at this point that is exactly why it seems like it will perform so good. Taking it from the level of an AIO though, let’s look at why it is the kind of unit that we should really consider buying. The pump and reservoir on the end of the radi...

DeepCool Gamer Storm TF120 Fan Review

Introduction If computer hardware had a trifecta, then a perfect score would be in the categories of performance, aesthetics and cost. It would be safe to say that you can usually score high in two categories, but you probably won’t get lucky with finding something that excels in all three. Costs aside, finding hardware that looks excellent while maintaining great performance can be hard as well. Today, DEEPCOOL has a new series of fans that look excellent for any gaming rig, but the real question is how well the 2-layer blade design will work in comparison to the old school single blade design. We’ll find out how the Gamer Storm TF120 does soon enough but first, let’s hear a word about the company behind the new design. Deepcool was founded with the mission of providing the best performance and humanized thermal solutions for worldwide customers. Established in 1996, headquartered in Beijing, factory was established in Shen Zhen, Deepcool originally produced desktop, server coolers and cooling accessories. With the rapid development of personal computers, Deepcool expanded the business into AIO liquid cooling products, chassis, power supplies.. Deepcool has built up its distribution network in about seventy countries all over the globe, by which end-users can purchase Deepcool products online or in their nearest local stores. With more and more media exposure and publication, such as awards from renowned websites and magazines like Tom’s Hardware, Tec...

Does Skylake Interest You? Here’s a Round-up of Z170 Motherboards

Introduction Do you remember back in the good ole days when a new processor would release, there would only be maybe 2-3 high end motherboards you’d have to choose from? Well those days are so far gone that now there is a figurative ocean of great motherboards to wade through in order to find the right one, and that’s a great thing. Even I’ve been a tad shocked at the shear number of new releases that have come out with Skylake and the Z170 chipset. Unfortunately, life isn’t going to permit me to bring you an exhaustive list of every Z170 motherboard that’s out or coming soon, but I will give you a pretty comprehensive list of the boards that you should be looking out for. The way I worked through this is I decided to pick out the top of the line boards that I feel are doing things right. The competition is looking great and while I can’t make a decision for anyone, I can help pool some of the info I’ve been gathering to try and help you make a good choice. What’s nice is even if these top tier boards are out of your budget range, there are plenty of other options abroad that will most likely suit you. Generally, if a high tier board is performing well and breaking records, you have a pretty good bet that others are going to come pretty close to the same performance. The one manufacturer I couldn’t bring myself to add to this list is EVGA. They just seem to pale in comparison to what the other companies are doing. So ...
