Newegg Hybrid Center Launch Party with AORUS

Sometimes being located in Southern California can have its benefits, and we’re not talking about the weather here. California being one of the larger states in the US houses most of today’s PC hardware and software companies. One of these companies is Newegg, and if you haven’t heard of Newegg; we have to say… you need to stop hiding under that rock. Newegg is one of the largest electronics e-tailers in the nation today. If you have ever thought about building a PC or looking for some of today’s latest gadgets, the one place you have probably searched is Newegg.com. Newegg houses some of the largest range of products available today in stock in their inventory and its where most of us PC enthusiasts turn to for some of the geek shopping. Today, at spur of the moment I was notified by a good friend of mine from NZXT (thanks Eric!) that Newegg was hosting a launch party at their new hybrid center. Newegg’s “will call” is located in City of Industry and has housed a space for many local consumers to be able to pick up their online orders; this allowed some of us locals to pick up the items and save some shipping costs if the item isn’t shipped for free. However, the space here was previously pretty empty and houses some chairs and seating in the waiting area and a counter to pick up your packages. But that wasn’t good enough for Newegg and now they have opened the “Hybrid Center,” which has some of today’s latest ...

Antec Announces New Availability of HCP 1300 PSU

Antec just announced that it’s highest end PSU, the HCP 1300 Platinum, is being released to new markets. What makes this interesting is they released this unit in India first, but now it looks like it’s hitting the American and European markets and possibly others that were harder to find mentions of. While the question may still remain of why a California based company would release a unit in India first, what makes this PSU more interesting is some new features that might be telling of the future of motherboards. The first feature of interest is the OC Link Technology. This actually came out a bit ago and allows two PSUs to be connected simultaneously to reach the power demands of a super high end system. With 1300 watts of power, it seems hard to imagine needing more than one unit, however, dual GPU cards can easily max out power demands once 2 or 3 of them are set up in one system. This could mean that there is a future for more dual GPU GFX Cards in the development pipes for the system builder. The more realistic reason though, is that with bit coin miners buying up power intensive AMD cards and running them 24/7, they need PSUs to have more than enough headroom over the power requirements of their systems so there’s less chances of burn outs. The other interesting feature to note is the inclusion of a 28-pin motherboard connector. The idea behind this is to future proof the PSU, but with new tech being more power efficient, it’s hard to im...

HTC aims to cure diseases with your smartphone

Our smartphones are gaining more and more power, opening new doors to new app functionality. This is not limited to games or programs to make your life easier. HTC now is joining ranks with SETI@home and Folding@home to be able to harness that power. HTC Power To Give aims to combine the power of your android smartphones to create a network of vast computational power. To make this possible, HTC with the help of the creator of SETI@home, Dr. David Anderson, have created an app which makes it very easy to do your part. After the app is downloaded from the Google Play store, when your phone is connected to WiFi and charging, your phone will be added to a huge network of phones all aiming to solve today’s greatest problems. HTC claims if they got 1 million HTC One smartphones all working together, it could be as powerful as a one-Petaflop supercomputer. At the current time, only HTC One and Butterfly phones can be used; however, HTC plans to add more and more Android devices. What will your phone’s processing power be used for? The power harnessed by these phones will be used to aid researchers in a variety of uses. One of the main focuses is researching a cure for cancer and other diseases; this is done mainly through protein folding. When a protein in your body does not fold correctly, there is a possibility to cause one of many diseases, including cancer. Protein folding can show scientists the correct sequences so they can find ways to prevent or treat diseases...

ASUS Z87 WS Motherboard Review

Introduction In the world of custom PC Building, consumers and builders frequently ask what the best motherboards are for Gaming PC Builds. While these are always valid questions, some folks are looking to build a high end rendering or workstation PC. The Z87 series chipset has plenty of options from the budget friendly models to enthusiast gaming motherboards; however, workstation motherboards are not as readily available. That changes today. We are going to be looking at a motherboard from ASUS, one of the few manufacturers who created a Z87 chipset based WS (workstation) motherboard to meet this niche market. We have the ASUS Z87 WS on our test bench, and we are going to put this baby to through the ringer. As an interesting aside, one of the few features of this motherboard which immediately caught our attention is the available support of Quad SLI and Crossfire with 4 PCIe slots available. Not many Z87 motherboards offer this out of the box. There are also tons of other features that we typically don’t see with your “typical” Z87 chipset motherboard. Does this bode well for this unique new board? Read on to find out! Let’s get the review started by talking about the 8 Series chipset, but first here’s a quick word about Asus:   Origin of the Name “Asus” ASUS comes from the last four letters of Pegasus, the winged horse in Greek mythology that represents the inspiration of art and learning. ASUS embodies the strength, cre...

The System Snicker of the Day: Nokia Cheats on Microsoft

As a hardware enthusiast, news can have many effects on me. I can get excited, become sad, laugh out loud and other times mildly snicker. This time I mildly snickered as I read that Nokia was releasing new Android phones. It wasn’t too long ago that they decided to go all in with Microsoft and release only Windows Phones, but the excitement of the new relationship has all but worn off, and Nokia found a new partner in Android. [Editor's Note: For now at least. Android Nokia phones will likely be a short lived venture once Microsoft actually takes the reigns of Nokia later this year.] Today the Mobile World Congress 2014 began and this announcement is just one of many that has the mobile market ecstatic, while leaving system builders in a slight lull. Don’t get me wrong, phones can be exciting, but this isn’t the huge announcement I’ve been waiting for. While I really could stand to upgrade my old Samsung Galaxy S (yes, the original one), the opportunity I saw in this announcement was a chance to talk about what I would like to see from Windows in the future. Windows 8, while not quite the disaster that was Vista, is still a major disappointment. Microsoft tried to make one OS that could span the bridges from phones, to laptops, to professional environments, and what they ended with was an overall failure in everything except maybe tablets. So what should Microsoft do next? Well, this is just one man’s opinion, but no matter how inconceivable, ...
