Both CPUs are based on the same 65nm, B3-revision Phenom core, and both chips have unlocked upper multipliers that allow for easier overclocking. The Phenom X4 9850 runs at 2.5GHz with a 125W thermal envelope, while the 9950 is clocked 100MHz faster and sports a more intimidating 140W TDP.
At $205, the Phenom X4 9850 BE is now competing almost directly with Intel’s 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad Q6600, which Newegg sells for $209.99 shipped. You can check out how the two CPUs compare in our review of the Phenom X4 9850 and 9750.
