Ken Su, senior marketing manager of graphics department at Qimonda Taiwan, indicated that Qimonda is having half of its GDDR fabricated on 70nm, and that the company will move to 58nm production by 2009 in order to shrink costs further.

Allan Wee, vice president of Qimonda’s Asia Pacific regional center, noted that the company aims to grab a 30% share in the GDDR market and that the company will dedicate more efforts to deploy into the high-end segment. In contrast to commodity DRAM that always demand higher memory densities, GDDR is about performance and Qimonda believes this is an area that it is strong at.

GDDR5 will be the focus of Qimonda GDDR in 2008, with most now shipping in 512Mb density. Volume production of 1Gb GDDR5 is slated for the second half of 2008, according to company executives.
