Radeon HD 3850 X2 arriving quarter two?
According to the article, AMD is looking for a card to compete in the US$299-375 market, as this is the current marketplace for the 8800GTS. However, AMD doesn’t seem too keen to foot the bill when it comes to R&D of such a card, and this is why the company is hoping that its partners will come up with their own products.
With companies such as Sapphire, PowerColor and GeCube having made their own efforts in the past with dual X1600, X1950 and HD 2600 parts, it’s not hard to see where this is heading. It looks like dual-GPU cards are indeed here to stay; it’s just a question of whether the market will accept them for being as good as a single GPU high-end card.
The HD 3850 X2 will retail between $299 and $379, giving Nvidia’s 8800 GTS a direct hit.
