Intel sets “Penryn” Xeon launch for November 11
Intel’s Penryn Xeon series naming scheme will kick off where the previous-gen left off. The ‘X’ series will feature a 120W thermal rating, the ‘E’ family will consume 80W and the low-power ‘L’ series will use 50W. While the 3.16 GHz X5460 and six ‘E’ series entrants will make their debut on November 11th, the ‘L’ series are scheduled for Q1 08. All the CPU’s set to launch this year all feature 12MB of L2 cache.
Intel?s Penryn architecture is the next evolution of the Core 2 micro architecture that made its debut with Woodcrest and Conroe processors. Penryn introduces a 45nm fabrication process with a few additional performance enhancements. Most notably, Penryn introduces new SSE4 instructions for enhanced multimedia performance.
