Intel ships over one million quad-core Xeon’s
Last year at the Intel Developer Forum, the company aimed to ship over one million quad-core Xeon’s before a single shipment of Barcelona took place – there’s one goal to cross off Intel’s to-do list. Intel’s Xeon 5300 series, based on the Clovertown core surpassed one million shipments earlier in the month. As PC World reports, the prices are a big issue in the chip’s sales.
The prices overlap those of Woodcrest, the code name of Intel’s dual-core Xeon 5100 series. For example, Intel’s Xeon E5345, which has 8M bytes of cache and four 2.33GHz cores, is the second-fastest Clovertown chip and is priced at US$851. That’s the same price as the Xeon 5160, the fastest Woodcrest chip, which has 4M bytes of cache and two 3GHz cores.
