Rewritable Blu-Ray and HD DVD media coming Q3

No-one’s denying that these little beauties won’t come cheap, not to mention the cost of the next generation DVD writers. We’re guessing that starting prices will be around $12 for a single layered disc. Prices aren’t expected to drop until other mass producers win accreditation to make the discs. Eric Ai, a Ritek representative, said manufacturing costs for both types of media are around the $5 mark.

Each single layer Blu-Ray disc holds 25GB, enough to hold three hours of HD TV, while HD DVD only stores 20GB of data. For reference, current single layer DVD’s hold 4.7GB.

A handful of Taiwanese companies dominate the disc mass production business, including Ritek and rival CMC Magnetics. These companies license disc technology from developers and then spin out as many of the discs as they can in a bid to drive down the cost of each disc and earn as much revenue as possible.
